Biking

Stehekin is a natural for a leisurely ride or mountain bikes. There are over 15 miles of road through some of the most incredible scenery you'll find anywhere in the world. Bicycles are used not only for the sake of riding but also make the best Valley transportation while you're here.

Landing to Harlequin Bridge & Back
(4.5 miles 30-45 min. each way)
This makes a nice leisure ride, and you're never far from home. You might make stops at the Stehekin Air Strip, Buckner Orchard, Rainbow Falls, the one-room school house/museum, and of course the Bakery. For the most part this is a very level ride. A few ups and downs but all are very gentle. This is definitely the choice for the person that enjoys light bike riding and a little exploring.

Harlequin to High Bridge
(6.5 miles 45-60 min each way)
The pavement ends at Harlequin Bridge from here you'll be riding on dirt road which is still very well maintained. You can choose to ride to High Bridge or you can catch the shuttle bus which has a bike rack. If you choose to ride, most of the time you'll be riding along the Stehekin River. The further you go the prettier it gets. High Bridge is a natural spot to stop either for a break or a picnic lunch before turning around. High Bridge is a wonderful old bridge that spans a high gorge above the Stehekin River. There is also a Park Service Guard Station at High Bridge as well as an outhouse.

From here you can take a short hike up to Coon Lake (Just a little over a mile or so) or if you're prepared for an overnight you can hike up to the summit of McGregor Mountain with an overnight at Heaton Camp. The trail up to the summit is over 7 miles with somewhere between a billion and a zillion switch backs. The payoff is a very small alpine campground with a view you won't believe. If you make the summit, you'll feel like you're on top of the world. The hike can be very strenuous, make sure to take lots of water. You can usually find some snow to melt at Heaton. If you plan to make a summit attempt make sure to stop by the Golden West Visitor Center to get route information!

Beyond High Bridge
(3 miles to Carwash Falls)
Ride your bike to the end of the current maintained road to "Carwash Falls".  Floods in October 2003 caused the upper Stehekin Road to be closed beyond this point.  If you prefer to continue up the valley, you'll have to leave the bike and catch the Pacific Crest Trail on foot.  See "hiking" section for more information on the many opportunities from this point!
